Watching cable TV in Japan
Thought of an update of Tokyo Newsletter.
Things are fine here. After sitting idle for 4 full months, I got a chance to start my work. So now the blame is on work, not on "nowork". Day by day I am realizing that doing good research is not an easy task and that is why there are only a few in the category of "good researchers". I also realized that why Nobel Prize is such a great thing.
Regarding life other than research, things are moving in a designed way. After moving to the new apartment, I started cooking. It was a dream came true for me as I was waiting for a kitchen of my own so that I can start cooking my own butter milk curry, my own rajma, my own sambar................and later I realized that the rajma I got from an Indian store here needs 2 full hours of pressure cooking to get it softened for a smooth digestion. You are going to be a loser in both ways-more gas for cooking means easy digestion and more toilet papers....less gas-less boiled rajma and less toilet paper (constipation).
Watching TV is an amazing experience here. I have CNN(CNN-j), Fox (Fox-j), Discovery (Not Discovery-j, but Japan-Discovery) etc. etc as exciting channels to watch. Then I have a Movie Plus channel. Here if they put the name Movie "PLUS" for a channel, they really mean it. Each movie is shownat least 8 times in a month (so is it addition or multiplication? If it is addition, "PLUS" justifies it). The advantage is that you will not miss even a single scene of the movie. If you miss a scene while going to kitchen or bathroom, next time, you will get that scene.....I watched Serendipity 5 times, The Duke 7 times, Leon times (sorry these are the latest release here). Each movie premier will make you frightened as one new movie means repetition for at least 8 times. In Fox, I am watching the third or fourth season of"Friends", that too each episode repeated in the same manner as before. One night I switched on the TV at 3'O clock in the morning and there is Friends again, the same episode I watched there in Columbia. I think this may be one of the reasons why many Japanese are depressed and the depression rate of people is 3 times higher than that of the world average. The pity is that even the advertisements are the same - in the same pattern and in the same sequence, in each and every repetition.
The cable TV also makes me to realize that Golf is not a bad game to watch. I have three channels dedicated only for Golf - 24 hours and onlyGolf (when we got TV in our home in the middle of 80s and when I watched Golf for the first time in my life, I wondered if we have a channel fully dedicated for Golf, whether people will go mad??? ........and now I have not only one, 3 channels, for Golf only.......that too with the traditional Japanese way of repetition........). I also got a new information that not only men, women are also playing Golf. The advantage of Golf is that since there are only 5 or 6 people playing a single game for the whole day, we may start creating some sort of bond between us and them. TigerWoods is my hero now and as usual, I did a Google search on Tiger Woods and found that he has already changed his girl friend once. And, if you are bored with Golf, you have Billiards.........another interesting game to watch.
So things are moving like that. On a more serious note, please don't be under the impression that life is a lot difficult here. I am just looking at the funny side only. Life is, in fact, really interesting here. We have alot of place to watch. As a matter of fact, I did more outing here than what I did there in Columbia for the whole one year. So if you people are getting any chance to visit Japan, make it that to happen. Stopping for the while. You can expect the updates in future too. Let me switch on the TV..............Oh! Here again.............MoviePlus........"Sum of All Fears".........Premier was yesterday night9.00 and the first repetition, today afternoon 1'O clock!!!!!See........
